RES VDX øker mulighetene i virtuelle miljø

RES Software Ships Standalone RES Virtual Desktop Extender to Enable Reverse Seamless Technology Across Various Platforms

Proven Technology Makes Virtual Desktops a Reality for any Organization, even those with the Heaviest Applications

Philadelphia, PA and Amsterdam, the Netherlands, February 15, 2011 RES Software, the proven leader in dynamic desktop solutions, today announced that its RES Virtual Desktop Extender (VDX)  is now available and shipping to customers exclusively as a standalone offering. Announced recently as a standalone solution, and on the heels of receiving European and United States patent approval, VDX enables enhanced interoperability with leading desktop virtualization solutions, including Citrix XenApp and XenDesktop, VMware View and Microsoft Remote Desktop Services, in addition to niche profile management solutions like AppSense Environment Manager. As a result, customers using a diverse mix of technologies at varying lifecycles in their terminal server and virtual desktop deployments, are able to easily merge local applications into users virtual desktops.

Inability to personalize desktop images is holding back the implementation of hosted virtual desktops (HVDs) for many organizations today, said Brian Gammage, Vice President and Gartner Fellow. Unless these images can support the local peripheral and application requirements of individual users, organizations cannot extend their deployments beyond a task-worker core and will fail to achieve the scale-economies that HVDs promise.

VDX serves as a fundamental component in the successful deployment of virtual desktops because it enables local applications that typically do not run smoothly, or at all, in virtual environments to run seamlessly within a virtual session. This functionality, commonly referred to as reverse seamless, is becoming even more critical as multimedia and communication-based applications continue to increase in bandwidth-intensiveness. VDX ensures these applications run efficiently and directly to the end-user without interruption or delay. It also works with various virtual desktop enabling technologies making it an ideal fit for any organization undergoing this desktop transformation.

VDX has been a proven and highly successful component of our RES Workspace Manager for many years, enabling organizations to best realize the benefits of the virtual desktop. However, as this space evolved, it became clear that the solution could also provide immense value as a standalone offering as it is designed to work with a host of virtual desktop delivery systems, said Bob Janssen, CTO of RES Software. Now, through a simple configuration process, organizations can enable VDX with their current virtual desktop technologies and enhance the performance of their most bulky applications to levels never before realized.

VDX completely integrates with RES Workspace Manager, the company's flagship product, to provide IT optimal management over local and remote applications and the ability to provide users with personalized and context-aware dynamic desktops.

More About VDX

RES Virtual Desktop Extender provides organizations the unique ability to seamlessly enhance a virtual desktop with applications that run locally. Because applications that end users rely on are merged within a remote desktop into a single desktop, users have no need to switch between multiple sessions. VDX extends the user workspace through independent computing architecture (ICA) and remote desktop protocol (RDP) virtual channels. VDX works with Citrix XenApp, Citrix XenDesktop, Microsoft Remote Desktop Services and VMware View. It provides a simple, cost-effective way to introduce Bring Your Own PC (BYOPC) models.

Sometimes called reverse seamless, VDX technology has already helped hundreds of organizations increase the ease of adoption of virtual desktop and terminal server environments by enabling users to access heavy applications like AutoCAD, Photoshop, diagnostic imaging, custom programs, multimedia (AVI) files and media intensive applications including CD/DVD applications, VoIP and video conferencing applications within their virtual desktops. VDX offers the flexibility for IT to rationalize applications, determining if it makes the most sense to run them locally or in the data center based on their intensity.

Additionally, VDX enables organizations to keep personal user desktop environments separate from the corporate environment, adding a new layer of security for IT.  This separation allows IT to host more sensitive applications in the data center, while simultaneously allowing users the freedom to run local applications. IT can control what data can and cannot move between the local and remote sessions. Users can run their preferred applications locally without fear that they will compromise the centrally hosted corporate environment. The solution also provides users the ability to write a DVD on a local computer from the virtual desktop. This capability is not currently available within today's virtual desktop technologies.

Pricing and Availability

VDX is now available and shipping to customers in standalone form. It is currently priced at $15 per seat.
